Why I Do This

I was lucky enough to be a teenager through the eighties and I was mad on music, big hair, bad make-up and all that went with being a teenager of the times. All these years later I still have the big hair but now it is "touched" with grey and the bad make-up is gone but the tunes still play loudly in my head and even louder if they grace my radio, tv or mp3player. I will gladly admit to being a"mainstream" fan for the most part but I do have the odd liking for some of the less "played to death" bands of the time. What started all this was a drawer full of slowly decaying cassettes and a fear of losing the music that is on them. So I began to recreate them onto CD and I am loving it and finding some fantastic albums along the way.

I would like to re-dedicate this site to my late husband, he lost his long battle with cancer in 2011, he was a huge 80's fan, possibly even more so than myself. So for you my love.

1981 Over The Top

This tape holds many memories for me. In the early 80's my dad was helping my step brother run a courier business and one night my younger sister and I got to go on a 6hour trip with him and this was the tape my step brother had in the tape deck at the time. I remember falling in love with Icehouse and Mondo Rock thanks to this tape

Side 1:
1: Mental As Anything - Too many times
2: Jona Lewie - Louise ( We get it right )
3: Devo - Beautiful world
4: Olivia Newton-John - Physical
5: Rick Springfield - I've done everything for you
6: Stevie Nicks + Tom Petty - Stop draggin' my heart around
7: Kim Wilde - Chequered love
8: Little River Band - The night owls
9: Ph.D - I won't let you down

Side 2:
1: Billy Squier - The stroke
2: Swanee - If I were a carpenter
3: Juice Newton - Queen of hearts
4: Icehouse - Love in motion
5: Mondo Rock - Chemistry
6: Billy Field - You weren't in love with me
7: Dave Stewart - What becomes of the broken hearted
8: Divinyls - Boys in town
9: Pat Benatar - Fire and ice

The album debuted on the Oz Top 100 chart 30 Nov 1981 and spent 14 weeks inside the top 100, peaking at #4 in time for Xmas. ( Many thanks to Rhys for the info)

I know your trying to do a good job with these compilations, but looks like somebody got carried away with the denoising feature of the software. It sounds awful and watery. I love vinyl and tapes, the way they are with all it's noises. Killing it with filtering software is just plain bad.

Also too, you may want to consider uploading your stuff to megaupload. I'm quite sure that rapidshare is administered by satin, as it is horribly hard to download from them. Also megaupload can handle file sizes up to 300 megs, so you can convert your compiolations into 320bps MP3's.

Have a great day :)

Thanks for your feed back, and I am sorry your disappointed with what I shared. I actually ripped each and every song for this album straight from 80's compilation CDs that I own or from the actual artists CD's that I own. I rip from the cassettes when I absolutely can not find the tracks elsewhere.
RE: Rapidshare Vs megaupload, I guess nobody will ever agree in that arguement. Once again, I thank you for you feedback.
It all helps :)

Hola! Now this is a great compilation! It's got Kim Wilde on it - I used to love Chequered Love n her Kids in America songs in '81 when they were new. ( and to this day I still do :D )
Other good hits here - Swannee - If I Were a Carpenter (good cover and in my opinion, better than the original version - he later fronted The Party Boys with 'He's Gonna Step on You Again' in 1987). Divinyls also - good Aussie band here - Chrissie Amphlett used to rock.
I will just say pretty much EVERY track on this album rules. No bad songs here. All good.
2 thumbs up, and there is NOTHING wrong with the bitrate, quality of audio (including the fact that all tracks are stereo and clean as a whistle), nor the total duration of each track, and all are original.
I used to have this on vinyl as well as tape back in the day and sadly, lost both. Some revival here - many thanks! :D
PS: if there is any 'de-noising' or 'remastering' it is usually at done by the record producers/companies of the albums concerned - e.g. EMI/Sony BMG - they tend to overdo/over-improve the remastering side of things and stuff up the tracks completely on some compilations (particularly with 70's albums e.g. ABBA). I usually never blame users/uploaders/bloggers - it's the way the CD/tape was made -companies mess them up not the users - you want perfection? you won't find much better than here :D

God.. the memories these bring back!
It was an era to behold... the choices we had in Aussie on the live band scene in Sydney anyway was phenomenal.. Any night of the week you could see numerous bands.. and all for bout $5-10 for 3-4 bands.. not $500 for 1 band like now.

Anyway Love ya work.

Meggsy, you bloody little ripper!!! I'm stoked as hell to have found this compilation, there's two "rare" versions of songs on here I've been trying to track down for YEARS. Jona Lewie's "Louise" I had as both a 7" single and a 10" extended version (it's actually the album and video version) which includes an extra 12 bars of instrumental in the middle of the song. I've only ever seen the single version available on CD, though there's still copies of the 10" floating about on eBay.

The real prize though is the single version of PhD's "I Won't Let You Down". Rarer than hen's teeth to find, I kid you not. They used to play the version here on Melbourne's EON-FM (now Triple M) back in the day and for myself I much prefer the quiet, understated keyboards & ride cymbal intro to the crack of the snare and majestic keyboard that's been tacked on to every compilation I've encountered since.

Impressive quality for 128kbits my friend, and I say that as someone who is not a great fan of the mp3 format. Nevertheless, your efforts here will tide me over until I can land a copy of this compilation and rip it at some insane flac specification for my own collection. Thank you ever so much, and a merry christmas to you and yours!
